Bamboozle - Bridge The Gap - 11th to 22nd June 2007
|
The not-for-profit voluntary organisation ‘Basketry and Beyond’ is planning this festival to profile the use of bamboo, cane and other materials that can be split and woven. The event will celebrate an engagement with basketry by providing opportunities for the general public to have direct experience of the techniques and materials used in the craft of basketweaving through site specific installations, performance, music and workshops.
|
|
We aim to bridge both theoretical and spatial gaps by holding an all-inclusive event, which will connect artists and professionals from diverse disciplines with the general public, through a visual extravaganza of traditional and contemporary aspects of basketry combined with structural bamboo work. |

We have initial funding from the Arts Council to research and develop the individual proposals that comprise the event, see details below:

Through early publicity we are offering interested individuals and groups, nationally and internationally, the time and the opportunity to consider how they could participate in the event, alongside the fishing village community of Porthleven and schools from the locality.

Plans for a trail of linked events so far include:
Proposed construction of a temporary bamboo ‘bridge’ which could be rolled out or levered into place between the two sides of the harbour – the idea of bridging the gap made visually exciting.
The bridge would not be for public access but would be integral to the performance.
It would be a free standing structure that could be deconstructed and stored for future use by performance companies.
Basketry Masterclasses to be taught by professional makers; bamboo weaving from Japan, bamboo construction from Columbia, split chestnut work from Spain and U.K, split cane work from Malta, courses to run either side of the main weekend.
Site specific pageantry, processions and cameo performances around the harbour.
Illuminated bamboo and willow structures created for the event by various groups within the local community, school children and visitors to the Fair.
A Bamboo Orchestra, performance and procession using musical instruments made of bamboo in schools and community groups.
Exhibitions of both traditional and contemporary work.
Bamboozle Spettacolo - finale of illuminated bamboo and willow structures floating in the sea, created for the event by various groups within the local community, school children and visitors to the Fair.
